Familia. What does that mean for Latinos? It means anyone that is there for you when you need them the most…and it applies to businesses and the community as well. Yesterday was a perfect example of how this works. Nancy Rosado, my community comadre and Chief Outreach Officer at Urbander, called me earlier this week to let me know she was coordinating a special lunch in Kissimmee, FL for some of the moms of the victims of the Pulse tragedy who are trying to manage getting through the holidays after losing their precious children. At the mention of food, we know how important it is to break bread over a good traditional home cooked meal as part of the familia experience. Who could we call “en familia” to donate the food? I knew immediately I could call Hiram Turull – owner of El Cilantrillo restaurant only a few blocks away from the St. James Episcopal Church where the lunch was being held. In two seconds flat he said – ¡Sí! Yes, absolutely! INSIGHT: We have this saying in Spanish “donde comen tres, comen cuatro”, “where three are able to eat, so can four.” Meaning that you can show up unexpectedly at your familia‘s door and you will get fed…they will provide a succulent meal and share bread with you. Thank you Hiram for your generous gift. God bless you, hermano. They loved it. You can count on us for anything…we are familia.
